β-Lactam compounds represented by the general formula:n [wherein X is phthalimido, azido, phenylacetamido, phenoxyacetamido, 2-thienylacetamido, orn (wherein R 2 is amino or protected amino, R 3 is hydrogen or methyl); Y is hydrogen, methyl or hydroxyl; Z is -CHR 4 N0 2 (wherein R 4 is hydrogen or straight or branched alkyl of C 1 -C 4 ) or formyl; R 1 is straight or branched alkyl of C 1 -C 5 (which can be substituted by halogen), substituted silyl, or benzyl, benzhydryl or trityl (whose phenyl nuclei can be substituted by methyl, methoxy or nitro); ---- represents single bond when Z is -CHR 4 NO 2 and represents single or double bond when Z is formyl; and in spite of the above definition, when X isn Z is-CHR 4 NO 2 ] are useful intermediates which can be converted to compounds having an antibacterial activity. |
