titleOfInvention MATRIX LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY DEVICE WITH ELECTRONIC CONTROL.
abstract A matrix of rows (102-1) and columns (101-2) of strip electrodes is used to switch bistable liquid crystal display cells from vertical to horizontal by resistive heating by applying an electric current of sufficient value and duration at the selected electrodes (102-1, 102-2). Under the effect of resistive heating, there occurs in the liquid crystals (130) a phase transition from the nematic mesophase to an isotropic phase. The extinction of the current allows the liquid crystals to cool preferably in the horizontal state of the nematic mesophase. The switching from the horizontal to the vertical state is obtained by conventional techniques of electric field effect. It is thus possible to produce devices having faster operation.
