Process for the preparation of a cation exchange multilayer membrane used in the electrolysis of an alkali metal halide to form a halogen, an alkali metal hydroxide and a hydrogen, comprising heating at least two incompatible fluorinated polymers having functional groups selected between sulfonyl and carboxyl at a temperature above the melting point of the polymers, coextruding the polymers into a composite film, cooling these films to a temperature below the melting point of each film and converting the functional groups into groups functional ionizable. The resulting film has increased resistance to cleavage in electrolysis cells. |
