Described are optically clear, soft contact lenses made from aqueous, swollen solid polyvinyl alcohol with a weight average molecular weight of at least 6000, which were annealed under crystallinity-promoting conditions in order to increase the elastic modulus of the swollen. effective magnification of the lenses, and if necessary subsequently crosslinked, and processes for their production and use. The lenses are characterized by their relatively high oxygen permeability, which is sufficient to meet the requirements of the human cornea, high optical clarity, improved hot water resistance and superior mechanical properties. |
