titleOfInvention Carbonaceous materials in water slurries
abstract Aq. slurries of coal (or other carbonaceous material) contain an ammonium salt (I) of a naphthalenesulphonic acid/formaldehyde condensate in an amt. sufficient to reduce viscosity and improve pumpability. The coal content may be 50-80%. The amt. of (I) added may be up to 10 (pref. 0.01-5) wt.%. In contrast to Na or other metal salts, (I) is ashless, has improved performance as a slurry stabiliser and gives aq. solns. with better cold storage stability and lower cost.
