New (4-halomethyl) -imino-benzoic acid alkyl esters of the formula and their HCI or HBr salts, where RC 1 -C 4 -alkyl or C, -C4-alkoxyethyl and X is Cl or Br. These compounds are prepared by reacting p-cyanobenzyl chloride or p-cyanobenzyl bromide with a C 1 -C 4 alcohol or C 1 -C 4 alkoxyethanol in the presence of hydrogen chloride or hydrogen bromide. The new imines serve as intermediates, among other things, for the production of optical brighteners from the bisbenzoxazolylstilbene series. |
