titleOfInvention Method of treating pulp with plural oxygen stages
abstract Wood pulp slurry (17, 73, 123, 209) is treated with oxygen (89, 429, 212) in a mill with little change in the process or structure of the mill. It is not necessary to use special pressure vessels. There is no need to change the consistency of the pulp for the processing step. The pulp can be processed to its usual consistency, for example, to the consistency when the pulp leaves a subsequent washer or steam mixer (86, 426, 206) without further dehydration or dilution. Oxygen is added in a closed section of the system so that it cannot immediately escape to the atmosphere. Alkali (85, 425, 207) should also be present when oxygen is mixed with the mud. Mixing (88, 428, 211) should take place near the point of oxygen addition. The pulp is treated with oxygen several times during a sequence. Some sequences are OXO and OOXO in which X can be a hypochlorite, a peroxide or ozone or chlorine, chlorine dioxide, combinations of chlorine (438) and chlorine dioxide (471), of a hypochlorite , a peroxide or ozone. The sequence can be followed by a stage D (232). Specific mixer models are also described.
