titleOfInvention | METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR PURIFYING WATER. |
abstract | An electrodialysis purifying system uses an anode (28), cathodes (66, 68), water currents (76, 78, 80, 82), lost currents (30, 112, 114, 116, 118, 120, 122, 124, 126, 128, 130) and ion exchange membranes (166, 192, 194, 196, 198) placed therebetween. Ion exchange beads are contained in water streams and in lost streams primarily for the purpose of controlling conductivity. Screens (162) support the membranes to improve longevity and ribs are provided in the element to resist the differential pressures encountered. Ion exchange sites are used throughout the system to increase the dissociation of water into its component ions. Such sites also help reduce the formation of lime deposits. Alignment tubes serve the dual purpose of routing water to multiple locations throughout the purifier and ensuring alignment of the various sections. In the complete water purification system, the anolyte can be removed from the purifier, filtered through activated charcoal and then used both as a stream of water and as an influent for lost currents. A second activated charcoal filter can be used after the purifier to extract harmful materials that can build up in the purifier itself. |
