titleOfInvention Systemic pesticide product and processes for making and using it
abstract Biodegradable products release, when introduced into the soil, systemic pesticides at a controlled rate for an extended period of time. Biodegradable compositions can be formed into spikes which can be sunk into the soil without causing damage. The products consist of a water-soluble hydrophilic solid polymeric binder and a systemic pesticide. Optional ingredients include plasticizers, fillers, dyes and a coating. The products are made by mixing the dry ingredients and shaping the resulting mixture by extrusion injection molding or other suitable process to obtain suitable shapes such as spikes. In a variant, the mixture obtained is molded by injection to form products having desired shapes. The formed products can then be coated with a water-permeable coating. The products are introduced or inserted into the soil in the vicinity of the plant. The soil moisture enters the (if any) biodegradable coating of the matrix and begins to dissolve the matrix and the pesticide contained inside. The pesticide is released initially quickly and then released on a controlled basis for an extended period of time. The released pesticide is absorbed by the plant roots in the sap, making it poisonous to insect pests. The rapid initial rate of release has the effect of rapidly killing at least a large proportion of the pests on the plants in the vicinity of the product and the subsequent controlled release kills the remaining pests and prevents the plants from being infested again.
