abstract A transfer channel which in use is contacted by molten ferrous metal has a protective inner replaceable lining (5,6) of bonded refractory, heat-insulating material which comprises at least 75% by weight of particulate refractory material. The inner replaceable lining (5,6) is reusable for a plurality of molten ferrous metal transfers. The lining (5,6) can be a plurality of pre-formed slabs (5,6) or one or more pre-formed, self-supporting essentially U-shaped lining sections. The lined channel can be used to transfer molten metal e.g. steel from a vessel e.g. a furnace to another vessel e.g. a ladle.
