N-substituted acrylic and methacrylamides are obtained in high yields by reacting acrylamide or methacrylamide in aqueous solution or in crystalline form in the presence of catalysts with at least 2 moles of amine per mole of acrylamide or methacrylamide and decomposing the reaction product at elevated temperature with elimination of amines. |
