abstract | New quaternary ammonium salts of the general formula wherein R 1 and R 2 each represent the same or different substituents from the group of the alkyl, aryl, aralkyl, alkylaryl, alkoxyalkyl, or (poly) alkylene glycol radicals or together with the nitrogen atom form a heterocyclic ring or at least one substituent R 1 or R 2 is multifunctional in such a way that a salt having at least 2 ammonium groups is represented; where R 3 and R 4 are identical or different monovalent radicals of at least one alkylating agent R 3 X or R 4 X, for example from the group of the (ar) alk (en) yl halides, sulfates, methosulfates, (alkyl) aryl sulfonates or sulfonic acid esters and A are an alkylene radical having 2 to 10 carbon atoms and n are an integer of 1 or more and Z is either the substituent X or another salt-forming anion or a hydroxyl ion, and processes for their preparation by N-alkylation and -o -Alkylation of an alkanolamine using a phase transfer catalyst. |
