abstract | High molecular weight aromatic polycarbonate resins are given improved flame retardancy by selecting suitable fluorescent diphenols and incorporating them into homopolymers or copolymers. Fluorescent diphenols have at least one fluorinated alkyl group or one fluorinated aryl group on the methylene carbon atom placed between the two phenol rings. Polycarbonates with better flame retardancy characteristics are produced from fluorescent diphenols and halogen-containing carbonate precursors. Copolycarbonates with improved flame retardancy properties are derived from fluorescent diphenols and non-fluorescent diphenols. The flame retardant polycarbonates can be used in films and molded articles where better flame resistance is desirable. |
