4-isopropyl-4'-nitro-benzophenone and benzophenones of the formula 1 wherein R is hydrogen, an alkyl group with 1 to 20 C atoms, or an alkoxy group with 1 to 20 C atoms, where the alkyl or alkoxy group may optionally be interrupted by oxygen, are reacted by reacting a compound of formula II prepared with a p-nitrobenzoyl halide in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst in an inert solvent, the reaction being carried out at from 10 to 140 ° C. in an aliphatic hydrocarbon, chlorinated aliphatic or chlorinated aromatic hydrocarbon. |
