titleOfInvention | Virucidal wipe and method |
abstract | Substantially dry, impregnated handkerchief containing iodine and means for preventing volatilization thereof, the iodine being present in a content of from about 1% to about 15% by weight of the handkerchief and in a sufficient content to allow anti-viral activity. The iodine content preferably ranges from about 2% to about 5%. A flexible paper substrate is preferred, and the most suitable substrate is represented by a tissue. The iodine retention means is preferably constituted by a suitable stabilizing surfactant present in an amount sufficient to complex the iodine, but preferably not exceeding excessively an amount sufficient to complex the iodine. A very suitable stabilizing surfactant is polyoxyethylene sorbitol septaoleate (40), the weight content of which relative to iodine is from about 1: 3 to about 2: 1, and preferably about 1: 2 . Method for reducing the transmission of viral infections of the respiratory tract, comprising providing a virtually dry nasal cleansing material of the type described and bringing the surfaces of the nose into contact with such material during a nasal discharge, and preferably, then wipe with the same material on the surface of the hands. |
