A process for the preparation of 1.4-3.6-dianhydro-hexitols from hexitols by elimination of water is described, characterized in that gaseous hydrogen halide is used as the acidic dehydrating reagent and in amounts of up to 600 mol%, based on hexitols, optionally as cocatalysts, organic carboxylic acids and acid halides and / or anhydrides are used and the reaction is carried out in the absence of water and organic solvents, preferably with gaseous hydrogen chloride at temperatures up to 300 ° C. and pressures up to 250 bar. Very good yields are obtained after working up by distillation or extraction. The 1.4-3.6-dianhydro-hexitols can be used as starting materials in polycondensation and polyaddition processes. |
