titleOfInvention | Electrochemical process for producing benzanthrones and planar polycyclic aromatic oxo compounds |
abstract | An electrochemical process for the production of benzanthrones and planar polycyclic aromatic oxy compounds is described. The process is carried out in acidic medium in an electrolysis cell separated by a diaphragm in the cathode and anode compartments.n n n In the cathode compartment, anthraquinone or an anthraquinone derivative is electrolytically reduced to oxanthrone and this is converted with glycerin to the corresponding benzanthrone.n n n In the anode compartment, a transition metal ion is simultaneously electrolytically transferred from the lower to the next higher oxidation state. The higher-value metal ion then serves as an oxidizing agent in the anolyte, with which the corresponding oxy compounds are obtained starting from planar polycyclic aromatic compounds. |
