titleOfInvention Drive system for plasma display panels
abstract In a control system (10) for a plasma display panel (12) having a cell (14a-14i) formed at the point of intersection of each of the column and segment electrodes of the panel (C1, C2, C3 and S1, S2, S3), alternating control signals having positive and negative components are applied simultaneously to the column and segment electrodes (C1, C2, C3 and S1, S2, S3) associated with a designated cell (14a-14i ) of the panel (12). These control signals are 180 degrees out of phase and are used to produce a voltage oscillation of sufficient magnitude to produce a discharge within the designated cell. In one embodiment of the control scheme, the positive and negative components of each control signal are equal. In a second embodiment of the control scheme, the positive and negative components of each signal are different. The control system (10) comprises a direct current / alternating current converter used to produce the alternating control signals, a control circuit (20a, 20b, 20c) associated with each column electrode (C1, C2, C3) of the panel display and a control circuit (18a, 18b, 18c) associated with each segment electrode (S1, S2, S3) of the display panel. Each of the column and segment control circuits can be actuated to supply the column or segment electrodes associated with it with the two components of its associated control alternating signal if it is selected or only one of the components of its command signal associates if not selected. In this way, the positive and negative components of the alternating control signals are applied selectively to the column and segment electrodes of the panel to produce the desired lighting configuration.
