Paper sizing agents in the form of an aqueous preparation of maleic anhydride copolymers whose anhydride groups have either been reacted with organic or inorganic bases or with primary tertiary diamines and the reaction products have subsequently been reacted with epichlorohydrin or with inorganic or organic acids with salt formation, the copolymers being composed of polymerized units of a) 5-75% by weight of a vinylaromatic, b) 10-75% by weight of acrylic and / or methacrylic acid C 1 -C 18 -alkyl esters, c) 5-35% by weight of maleic anhydride, d-) 0-25% by weight of other vinyl monomers and e) 0.1-10% by weight, based on the sum of the monomers a) - d), which is always 100% by weight, of an unsaturated aldehyde or an enol ether derived therefrom. n n n The copolymers are prepared by radical polymerization, preferably in the absence of solvents. |
