Tryptophan hydantoin is manufactured in such a way that one a) a compound of the general formula in which A denotes an alkylene group with 2 or 3 carbon atoms which is unsubstituted or substituted by 1 to 2 methyl groups, in aqueous or aqueous-alcoholic solution with hydrogen cyanide or a compound which provides cyanide ions, ammonia or an ammonium ion compound and carbon dioxide or a carbonate compound for the reaction brings and b) reacting the reaction mixture obtained at a pH between 0.1 and 4 with phenylhydrazine.
