titleOfInvention COMBUSTION ENGINE.
abstract A two-cycle, two-cylinder (10), (12) opposed piston (14), (16), (18), (20) internal combustion engine having means for continuously adjusting the stroke of the engine and the blocking and unblocking of intake (88), (92), transfer (90) and exhaust (102) ports with respect to each other as the engine is operating. Corresponding pistons of each cylinder are connected to respective ends of pivotally mounted rocker arms (24) or (24'), and (34) so that pistons in one cylinder move oppositely with respect to pistons in the other cylinder, the piston side surfaces alternately blocking and unblocking transfer and exhaust ports. In a particular embodiment, the rocker arms (24') are each fitted with a flat spring (154) or (154') positioned so as to be in contact with the end of the associated piston rod and deflecting to allow the pistons to move apart at an increased speed in advance of the crankshaft. The springs (154) and (154') are secured and limited so as to provide increasing spring moment as the springs are deflected. Two connecting rods (48) and (59) are provided, one of which is attached at one end to each of the rocker arms at a pivot point distal from the rocker arm pivotal mount (26) or (36) and at the other end to a rotatably mounted eccentric (52), one end of which is formed into a shaft (54) containing a power drive gear (56) operatively connected to a drive shaft (60), the eccentric being rotated due to an up and down motion of the connecting rod. Means (47), (50) and (63), (64) are provided for continuously varying the attachment points of the connecting rods to the rocker arms, thereby altering the allowable pivotable movement of the rocker arm and consequently the stoke or maximum spaced-apart distance of the pistons in each cylinder. Also, the shaft portion (54) of one of the eccentrics forms twisted splines on its outer surface, its associated power drive gear being (56) adapted to mesh with the twisted splines so that the gear is rotated as it is longitudinally displaced along the shaft. Means (104), (106) are provided for continuously displacing this gear thereby changing the angular relationship between the two rocker arms, and thus the relative positioning of the pistons contained in each cylinder. This changed position alters the blocking of the exhaust ports with respect to the unblocking of the transfer ports. Remote combustion chamber (128), (129) and a means (136), (138) for ensuring that the volume in which combustion takes place remains substantially constant during the combustion process.
