abstract |
An anaerobic digester for use in the treatment of farmyard waste to yield a methane-containing gas and a liquid fertiliser comprises a covered elongate tank (1) to one end (13) of which raw slurry is fed and from the other end (15) of which treated slurry is removed. Positioned within the tank (1) towards the slurry entry end thereof is a vertically arranged heat exchanger (18) comprising a cylindrical body of annular cross-section and up through which slurry is drawn by rotatable means (35), usually paddles carried on a shaft (23) connected to drive means (24) for effecting rotation thereof. Adequate power supply in open country locations can generally be achieved by use of a windmill as drive means (24). |
