titleOfInvention A process for the preparation of polyether glycols
abstract A polyether glycol useful as a starting material for the preparation of various polymers (e.g. polyurethanes, elastomeric polyesters and elastomeric polyamides) is prepared by:… (A) polymerizing tetrahydrofuran or a mixture of tetrahydrofuran with one or more other copolymerizable cyclic ethers in the presence of a ring-opening polymerization catalyst whose principal component is fuming sulphuric acid and/or fluorosulphuric acid;… (B) heating the reaction product with water or with an aqueous alkaline solution under strongly acidic conditions to hydrolyze the product; and… (C) washing the hydrolysis product, which is the desired polyether glycol.… The polymerization in step (A) is carried out in at least two stages:… (1) in a first stage contacting the monomer or monomers with the polymerization catalyst at a temperature of from -30 DEG C to +10 DEG C; and… (2) in a subsequent stage, when conversion of the monomer to polymer has reached at least 5%, elevating the reaction temperature to a value which is from 0 DEG C to 40 DEG C and is at least 10 DEG C higher than the temperature in the first stage, and continuing the polymerization at this elevated temperature. The two stage polymerization technique enables a highly functional polyether glycol having a relatively low molecular weight (e.g. from 500 to 5,000) to be produced easily and effectively.
