Sterilized, preserved, stable solutions containing mucin applied to sensitive mucous membranes of the oral cavity, the nasal system, and the epithelium of the human eye, which contain an oxidizing bactericide, in particular oxygenated water, as a preservative. Even with very small concentrations of oxygenated water, the solutions remain bactericidal for extended periods, for example 1-2 years. The mucin used is a porcine gastric mucin or a bovine salivary mucin or - to adjust the polar / non-polar properties - a mixture of the two. The solutions have a viscosity of 50, at most, relative to water, measured with an Oswald viscometer. The pronounced lubrication effect, combined with an appropriate viscosity, low surface tension and the ability to coat and protect the mucous membranes makes the solutions very suitable as artificial saliva, ophthalmic solutions, and drug carriers. |
