titleOfInvention Apparatus for measuring the partial pressure of oxygen and of a gas which in aqueous solution generates an acid or a base
abstract Measuring electrode device (1) for measuring the partial pressure of oxygen and carbon dioxide (or other gas producing an acid or a base in aqueous solution) comprising a cathode (62) and an anode for polarographic oxygen measurement and a pH measurement electrode (16) with an associated reference electrode for pH determination, an electrolyte in contact with the electrodes and a membrane (12) permeable to oxygen and carbon dioxide. The functions of the anode and the reference electrode are suitably provided by an electrode (80). In order to compensate for the production of hydroxyl ions at the cathode, the device comprises a compensation electrode (66) in contact with the electrolyte and connected to compensation means, typically an operational amplifier, passing a current through the compensation electrode so that it electrochemically consumes hydroxyl ions in a quantity stoichiometrically equivalent to the hydroxyl ions generated at the cathode. A compensation electrode can consist for example of platinum or aluminum. When used for the transcutaneous determination of the partial pressure of oxygen and carbon dioxide contained in the blood, an electrode device regulates thermostatically to a temperature slightly higher than the temperature of the skin is applied to a surface of a patient's skin.
