The present invention provides a process for the preparation of antibacterially active carbapenems of the formula:n and salts and esters thereof wherein R 1 and R 2 are independently hydrogen or an organic group bonded via a carbon atom and R 3 is a group NR 4 R 5 wherein R 4 optionally substituted alkyl, aryl and aralkyl, and R 5 is hydrogen or optionally substituted alkyl or R 3 is optionally substituted aryl or alkyl: which process comprises the reaction of a C-3 mercapto carbapenem with an aziridine (CH 2 ) 2 NCOR 3 . |
