abstract New 2-substituted 5-phenoxy-phenylphosphinic acid derivatives with herbicidal activity, process for preparing the same, herbicidal compositions containing them and use of the new active compounds and compositions. The present invention relates to new herbicidally active and plant growth-inhibiting 2-substituted 5-phenoxy-phenylphosphinic acid derivatives of the formula wherein R, an optionally substituted alkyl or aryl radical, R 2 is a hydroxyl group, lower alkoxy, alkylthio, alkylamino, dialkylamino or chlorine, X halogen, CF 3 , NO 2 or CN, n is a number from zero to 3, and Y is one of Groups N0 2 , NH 2 , OH, CN or halogen.n n n Preferred are 2-nitro-5- (2'-chloro-4'-trifluoromethyl-phenoxy) -phenyl-alkyl-phosphinic acids and their lower alkyl esters.n n n . The invention also relates to the production of the new phosphinic acid derivatives starting from a 3,4-dinitro-diphenyl ether and reaction with a 0,0-dialkyl-alkyl or aryl-phosphonite as the first stage.n n n Furthermore, the subject of this invention are both herbicidal and plant growth regulating compositions which contain one of these new active compounds as active component, and also the use of the active compounds and compositions for weed control (also selective), for inhibiting the growth and desiccation of aerial parts of plants and for total destruction existing plant growth.
