abstract | A non-ionic surfactant of the general formulan wherein X is an organic radical derived from a compound containing at least two reactive hydrogen atoms as hereinafter defined and between 3 and 8 carbon atoms, R, is an H atom or a methyl group and R 2 is a methyl or an ethyl group, and each of m and n represent an integer from 2 to 20 n the radical X being derived from a lower molecular weight compound containing not more than 6 reactive hydrogen atoms and selected from aliphatic di- or polyhydric alcohols, alkylamines and alkylene polyamines, amides and alkanolamines, produced by the reaction of a vinyl carboxylate of the formulan wherein X and R, have the same significance as in formula (I) above and in which at least one of the reactive hydrogen atoms in X is available for further reaction, initially with at least one mole of a hydrophobic olefin oxide containing 3 or 4 carbon atoms and subsequently with at least one mole of ethylene oxide at elevated temperature in the presence of an alkoxylation catalyst. |
