abstract Novel 8-substituted pyrrolizidines having the formula:(wherein R is a C<sub>1</sub>-C<sub>10</sub> hydrocarbon group, a lower aliphatic carboxyl group esterified with a lower alcohol, a lower aliphatic carboxyl group amidated with a C<sub>5</sub>-C<sub>13 </sub>primary or secondary amine, a C<sub>2</sub>-C<sub>14</sub> lower alkyl group which has a hydroxyl group and has optionally aryl substituents, a lower alkyl group which has a hydroxyl group esterified with a C<sub>2</sub>-C<sub>16</sub> carboxylic acid or etherified with a C<sub>2</sub>-C<sub>13</sub> alkohol, a lower alkyl group which has a primary amino group or a C<sub>1</sub>-C<sub>14</sub> mono- or di-substituted amino group, or a lower alkyl bearing a C<sub>2</sub>-C<sub>10</sub> acyl group) and quaternary ammonium salts thereof. These compounds have pharmacological activities such as spasmolytic activity on the smooth muscle of guinea pig ileum.
