abstract The claimed coupler components are m-phenylenediamine derivatives of the formula (I) or their ammonium, alkali or alkaline earth metal salts. X = oxygen atom or absent A = alkylene (C 1-4 )n n n The derivatives are obtained by reacting 2,4-dinitrophenyl compounds with hydrogen in the presence of hydrogenation catalysts. The use of a combination of the couplers according to the invention and customary developer substances in hair colorants is 0.2-5 (1-3)% by weight. The light, wash and rub-fast dyeings achieved range from red to dark brown tones.n n n The coupler compounds are water-soluble, stable in storage and toxicologically and dermatologically harmless.
