titleOfInvention | Suspension polymerization process for making vinyl resins for use in plastisols |
abstract | Suspension polymerization of vinyl monomers in an aqueous medium to form vinyl resins for use in the production of plastisols. The process is carried out in an aqueous medium using a free radical catalyst in the presence of a hydrolyzed polyvinyl acetate (polyvinyl alcohol) having a degree of hydrolysis in the range between about 65% to about 85% and a compound having a hydrophilic-lipophilic balance (HLB) of less than about 3.5. The important aspect of the new process consists in the use of an agitation ramp, that is to say in the change of the degree of agitation during the reaction, and the addition of the catalyst to the reaction medium. after it has reached the reaction temperature at which polymer particles are produced corresponding to dense and spherical glass beads having an average diameter in the range between about 10 and 100 microns. The suspension resins thus produced readily and uniformly mix with a plasticizer to form low viscosity plastisols which are stable, contain particles of uniform and suitable size, and can produce films, or the like, having good clarity. |
