titleOfInvention Process for the reaction of the destillation residue from the synthesis of ethyl benzene
abstract The invention relates to a process for reacting the distillation residue obtained in the synthesis of ethylbenzene by alkylating benzene with ethylene in the presence of catalysts and then separated off in the polyethylbenzene column. The distillation residue is used to obtain ethylbenzene in the absence of benzene in the presence of 2 to 20% by weight of anhydrous aluminum chloride, based on the residue and in the presence of approximately equimolar amounts of hydrogen chloride, based on aluminum chloride, at temperatures of 30 to 150 ° C and at Residence times from 20 minutes to 6 hours, if necessary with stirring. The reaction product obtained is separated into a) a specifically lighter organic phase, which essentially contains the valuable substances, and b) a specifically heavier phase, which essentially contains high-boiling aromatics and catalyst residues. From the specifically lighter organic phase a), the valuable substances are obtained in the usual way by distillation. To destroy complex aluminum chloride organyls, the specifically heavier phase b) should be treated with water or sodium hydroxide solution at least in a further process step.
