abstract There are provided novel isoxazole carboxylic acid phenyl esters of the formula:n wherein R 1 , R 2 , R 3 , R 4 and R 5 are each hydrogen, halogen, lower alkyl (C 1 -C 4 ), lower alkoxy (C 1 -C 4 ), trifluoromethyl or trichloromethyl; R 6 is lower alkyl (C 1 -C 4 ); and X is sulfur or oxygen. n The novel compounds are useful intermediates for the preparation of certain anti-inflammatory substituted cis-2-benzoyl-3-hydroxy-alkenonitriles forming the subject of European Patent Application No. 0016277A. Certain of the novel compounds themselves exhibit anti-inflammatory activity.
