abstract The new benzodiazepine derivatives of the formula wherein R 1 is lower alkyl, R 2 is hydrogen or lower alkyl, R 3 is hydrogen or halogen, R 4 is hydrogen or a radical of the formula R 5 -CO-, R 6 R - N-CO-. or A lower alkylene. X represents an oxygen or sulfur atom or a radical of the formula R5 lower alkyl or lower haloalkyl. R 6 is hydrogen or lower alkyl. R - lower alkyl and R 6 are hydrogen, lower alkyl or lower hydroxyalkyl, and their pharmaceutically acceptable acid addition salts have aldosterone-antagonistic properties and are therefore suitable for combating or preventing heart failure, hepatic ascites, primary aldosteronism and essential hypertension. They can be prepared using various methods, starting with some new starting materials, and brought into pharmaceutical form.
