abstract 2-(4-Nitrophenyl)-2-methylmalonate esters are prepared by reacting 4-nitrophenyl halides with methylmalonate esters in the presence of a base. The base is preferably an alkali metal hydroxide or potassium carbonate. The products can be reduced to the corresponding 2-(4-aminophenyl)-2-methylmalonate esters. The 3-fluoro-4-nitrophenyl and 4-amino-3-fluorophenyl deriviatives of both types of esters are novel. n The aminophenylmalonate esters may be coupled with a benzene compound and decarboxylated to give 2-arylpropionic acids such as flurbiprofen. Alternatively, decarboxylation of the 4-nitrophenylmalonate ester may be followed by reduction and coupling, again to give 2-arylpropionic acids and esters.
