The invention relates to new, nonionic, in the 5-position C-substituted 2,4,6-triiodoisophthalic acid derivatives of the general formula wherein X is the residue -CO-NR 1 R 2 , -COOR 3 , -CH 2 · NH · R 7 or -CH 2 OH. Y is the residue NR 1 R 2 or OR, Z represents the radical —N · R 1 R 2 , —NH · R 7 , -NH · sugar residue or -OR 3 , where -NR 1 R 2 in X, Y and Z are identical or different, R 1 and R 2 are the same or different and represent a hydrogen atom or an optionally mono- or polyhydroxylated straight or branched chain alkyl radical, R 3 is a lower, optionally hydroxylated alkyl radical and R, the acyl radical of an optionally hydroxylated lower aliphatic carboxylic acid, where OH groups present can also be functionally modified. n n n Because of their good pharmacological and physicochemical properties, the new compounds of the formula I are outstandingly suitable as shading substances in all areas of application of water-soluble iodine-containing X-ray contrast media.
