A process for the preparation of 1,2-dichloroethane is described, 1 mol of ethylene, 0.35 to 0.7 mol of chlorine, 0.7 to 1.4 mol of hydrogen chloride and 0.2 to 0.6 mol of oxygen, if appropriate together with inert gas, at 180 to 260 ° C and a pressure of 0.09 to 1.1 MPa in the presence of a copper-containing fixed bed catalyst in a reaction space which contains heatable and coolable surfaces. The process enables better utilization of the heat generated during the chlorination of ethylene. |
