Compounds of the formulae n<CHEM>n wherein R1, R2 and R3 are hydrogen or C1-C3 alkyl radicals and the total carbon numbers of R1, R2 and R3 combined is 6 or less, their derivatives of the formulae n<CHEM>n wherein X isn n<CHEM>n R4 being hydrogen, alkyl, alkenyl or alkoxy, R5 being hydrogen, hydroxy, alkoxy, alkanoyloxy or cyanoalkoxy, and the total number of C-atoms of R4 and R5 combined being 8 or less n<CHEM>n Z being an alkylene group of 6 C-atoms or less n<CHEM>n R6 being hydrogen or alkyl, R7 being hydrogen formyl, alkanoyl, carboalkoxy or cyano, and the total number of C-atoms of R6 and R7 combined being 4 or less or n<CHEM>n R8 being hydrogen or alkyl, C9 being cyano or carboalkoxy, and the total number of C-atoms of R8 and R9 combined being 4 or less, their preparation by maintaining an oxo compound of formulae n<CHEM>n in an acid environment created by the presence of a proton acid or a Lewis acid for a period of time sufficient to cause said oxo compound to undergo a skeletal rearrangement and, if so desired, subsequently converting the n<CHEM>n group to a group (a), (b), (c) or (d), and the use of the compounds and their derivatives as perfumes or as components of perfumes. |
