titleOfInvention Process for preparing 3-amino-1-hydroxypropane-1,1-diphosphonic acid
abstract Poly-β-alanine or β-alanine, the amino groups of which may be substituted by lower alkyl radicals, are reacted with a mixture of phosphorous acid and PCl5 or phosphorous acid, PCl3 and chlorine at 80 to 120 (100) ° C. and the reaction mixture is subsequently passed through Addition of water hydrolyzed to solubility. The resulting products crystallize out of the aqueous solution in good yield. They are good complexing agents. Applications: in cleaning and water treatment agents. 1 to 1.5 mol of H3PO3 and 1 to 1.5 mol of PCl3 are expediently used per mol of β-alanine, or a mixture of β-alanine, H3PO3 and PCl3 in a molar ratio of 1: 1: 1, into which chlorine gas is introduced. The product yield can be increased by separating the mother liquor and adding alcohol or acetone. Optionally, diluents such as chlorobenzene, tetrachloroethane, tetrachlorethylene, trichlorethylene or carbon tetrachloride can be used in the reaction.
