titleOfInvention A process for the electrochemical degradation of persistent organic compounds, with harmful or potentially harmful properties
abstract A process is described for the electrochemical degradation of at least one persistent harmful or potentially harmful organic compound. n The process comprises anodically oxidising or cathodically reducing the organic compound or compounds (i.e. mixture of compounds) in an aqueous liquid system in which the compound is at least partially soluble. One or more unstable cationic radicals are formed which react with a reactive component in the liquid system which may be at least partly its solvent component to form a product or products having a lower oxidation potential in the case of anodic oxidation or a lower reduction potential in the case of cathodic reduction than that of the parent compound or compounds subjected to the electrochemical degradation.
