abstract |
Recovering isoprene from a C 5 hydrocarbon fraction by (i) distillation (D,) to remove hydrocarbons boiling below isoprene; (ii) a liquid-liquid extraction stage (E 1 ) using a sulfolane to form a first raffinate phase rich in normal-pentane and pentenes and a sulfolane extract phase rich in isoprene, subjecting the sulfolane extract phase to liquid-liquid extraction (E 2 ) using a counter-solvent, which is a C 6 or higher alkane, as the extractant to form a second raffinate phase comprising mainly the sulfolane and a counter-solvent extract phase rich in isoprene and distilling (D z ) the counter-solvent extract phase to remove the counter-solvent therefrom; (iii) distillation (0 3 ) to remove hydrocarbons boiling above isoprene, provided stage (iii) does not precede stage (ii). |
