titleOfInvention | Preparation of graft polymers of proteins and their use |
abstract | The invention relates to a process for producing hydrophilized graft polymers from vinyl monomers and proteins by reacting animal products containing or consisting of proteins or modified forms of these products with at least one vinyl monomer under conditions which effect grafting. In this process, the proteins or proteins containing, optionally modified, products, which are present in small particles, are reacted with vinyl monomers bearing acidic, basic or salt-containing groups in liquid reaction medium under the influence of radical or redox initiators or under the influence of high-energy radiation. Collagens, leather waste, chrome shavings or wool fibers are used as starting materials. In a modification of the process, vinyl monomers are used which carry substituents which are only hydrolyzed to acidic, basic or salt-like groups after the graft polymerization has ended. In particular, the graft polymers prepared by the processes according to the invention can be used to absorb and / or retain aqueous liquids or moisture. |
