titleOfInvention Coal liquefaction process with improved slurry recycle system
abstract In a coal liquefaction process comprising recycling a product slurry (14) comprising solid dissolved carbon, and an inorganic residue, the minimum recycling rate is determined by the pumping stress due to the level of solids in the vessel. mixing of the coal feed (6). If the solids level in the coal feed mixing vessel exceeds the level of this constraint, the slurry recycling rate must increase. For coals which generate a high mineral residue content, proper dilution of the slurry in the coal feed mixing vessel implies that the slurry recycling rate must be at an economically unacceptable level. In the present process, the mechanical operation is improved and an increased conversion to solid dissolved carbon is accomplished at a given level of stress related to the solids level, by passing part of the product slurry from the liquefaction zone through. hydroclone (60), and the hydroclone overflow stream (61) constitutes a second recycle slurry. Deployment of the second recycle slurry increases the proportion of relatively small particles of mineral residue that are more catalytically active in the process.
