abstract Novel 7-hydroxyprostaglandins E₁, or stereoisomers nthereof, or protected derivatives thereof, having the following nformula: n nwherein R⁸ represents H, CH₃ or C₂H₅, R⁹ represents H or nCH₃, R¹⁰ and R¹¹ are identical or different, and each represents nH, tetrahydropyranyl or t-butyldimethylsilyl. n Also provided is a process for producing adjacently disubstituted nketones including the above novel compounds, nwhich process comprises reacting an α, β-unsaturated carbonyl ncompound with a cuprous salt and an organolithium ncompound in an aprotic inert organic medium in the presence nof trialkylphosphine, the amounts of said cuprous salt and nsaid organolithium compound being substantially equimolar, nand reacting the product with a protected acetal derivative of nan organic carbonyl compound or an aldehyde in the presence nof a Lewis acid if necessary followed by reacting the nproduct with a proton donor.
