Use of diamines of the formula in which R and R 1 are the same or different and each represents a straight-chain or branched alkyl radical having a total of 1 to 14 carbon atoms or an optionally alkyl-substituted cycloalkyl radical having a total of 3 to 12 carbon atoms, as active substances for controlling harmful organisms in water and other, in particular technical, materials.
