titleOfInvention FILTRATION APPARATUS FOR SEPARATION OF LIQUID SUSPENSIONS CONTAINING BLOOD CELLS.
abstract A filtration device (10) separates a liquid filtrate without blood cells from a liquid suspension containing blood cells in continuous laminar flow, using a microporous filtration membrane (32). The filtration flow channels (130) along the upstream side surface of the membrane (32) have a width, which across the membrane surface gradually and uniformly widens from the inlet (22) to the outlet (24) of the flow channel, which gradually and uniformly varies the rate of separation of the suspension on the membrane wall, as it flows laminarly through the flow channel (130), d 'a maximum value at its input (22) has a minimum value at its output (24). Such variation in the separation rate corresponds to the trans-membrane pressure conditions along the length of the flow channel (130) so as to allow better control of the filtration operating conditions and to achieve filtration rates per unit area of filtration. membrane (32) optima without damaging blood cells. Useful applications of the device (10) such as separation of plasma from blood by continuous flow plasmapheresis, and removal of cryoprotectants from previously frozen, thawed blood cell preparations.
