abstract Bis-epoxy-diskkoxy-alkanes of the general formula in which R 3 to R 3 are alkyl with 1-4 C atoms, as intermediates for the preparation of the flavoring 2,5-dimethyl-4-hydroxy-2,3 dihydro-furan- 3-one. The new bis-epoxy-dialkoxy-alkanes are obtained by reacting the corresponding α, α-dihalo-1,2-diketones at temperatures from - 20 to + 100 ° C with an alkali metal hydroxide or an alkali metal alkoxide and an alkanol. To prepare the 2,5-Dielkyl-4-hydroxy-2,3-dihydro-furan -3-one, the bis-epoxy-dialkoxy-alkanes are heated to from 60 to 120 ° C. using strong mineral acids or strong organic acids.
