abstract A bulk sulphonation process for sulphonating an elastomeric polymer wherein the polymer and sulphuric acid, chlorosulphonic acid or S0 3 as sulphonating agent are mechanically mixed whereby the polymer is in a state of flux in the substantial absence of solvent at a temperature below 250°C and above the glass transition temperature or crystalline melting point. Either the free sulphonic acid is recovered or the sulphonic acid is neutnlitad before recovery.
