Process for the preparation of organotin compounds of the formula (I) wherein X is a chlorine, bromine or iodine atom, R is independently a hydrogen atom or alkyl, and Y means OH, NH 2 or OR ', wherein R 'represents a hydrocarbon group of aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or aromatic character, optionally containing a functional group, by the direct reaction of a tin dihalide with an unsaturated nitrile of the formula (II) wherein R has the meaning given above, and hydrogen chloride, bromine or hydrogen iodine, characterized in that the reaction is carried out in the presence of water, a carboxylic acid or water and alcohol or at least 3 moles of alcohol per mole of nitrile.
