From fresh feces of the reticulated python, a new species of the genus Akkermansia has been isolated. This species is named Akkermansia glycaniphilus. It is able to grow using mucus as the sole source of carbon and nitrogen. The species can be used as a medicine, probiotic or cosmetic, for example, to help reduce weight, to stimulate the intestinal immune system, to maintain, restore and / or enhance the physical integrity of the mucosal intestinal barrier and to prevent or treat a variety of associated diseases or disorders . |
